I’m not a Dr Who fan. In fact, I think the last time I saw Dr Who he was wearing a long stripy scarf and I was hiding behind the settee because I was scared of the Daleks. But in researching for my latest commission I’ve just watched some clips from Vincent and the Doctor I found on YouTube – and it had me in tears. Maybe that’s because I am a big Van Gogh fan. The bit in Musee D’Orsay where Bill Nighy is talking about Van Gogh’s work and the look on Vincent’s face – wow! And the fact that he’s looking in awe at Monet’s paintings and doesn’t notice the sign for the Van Gogh room. So now I need to watch the entire episode – with a box of tissues.
So. The commission. A splash back for a couple of big Dr Who fans, to complete their shiny new kitchen.
Starry Night is my favourite Van Gogh painting so I’m going to love creating this. It’s not the first time I’ve recreated Starry Night. I made a version using Venetian Smalti a few years ago.
I’ve drawn out a plan for the splash back and I’m looking at a few techniques to create it.
I will be using glass powders and my aim is to get a Van Gogh style texture to the piece.
I’m going to love making this.
I plan to share progress photos and videos as I work on the commission.
